Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to a sugar molecule called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), found in most mammals. It is triggered by the bite of a Lone Star tick — and once sensitized, your immune system can react to mammal-derived ingredients in food, medications, and personal care products.
Reactions can range from mild hives and digestive upset to severe anaphylaxis, and they often appear hours after exposure — making the connection difficult to identify. Many people go years without a proper diagnosis.
